About this map

Lowndesville serves as the primary settlement on this landscape, which is defined by the expansive waters of Richard B Russell Lake. This reservoir has reshaped the riverine border between South Carolina and Georgia, flooding the historic lowlands of the Savannah River valley. Local history is preserved through numerous rural burial sites and landmarks, such as Providence Cem and the Smyrna Ch. Further south near the water's edge, Ridge Cem and Old McCalla Cem stand as markers of earlier generations. The terrain is crisscrossed by many creeks and branches, including Charles Cr and Bowman Br, which feed into the lake. Evidence of former transportation networks remains visible in the street grid of Lowndesville, including Depot St, pointing to the area's history as a rail-connected agricultural hub before the mid-century creation of the lake changed the local geography.
