2013 Map of Luna

USGS Topo · Published 2013

About this map

Luna serves as the central hub of this Catron County landscape, situated where the San Francisco River meets the expansive Luna Valley. The terrain is defined by dramatic elevation shifts between high plateaus like Bill Lee Mesa and Hellroaring Mesa and the deep incisions of Lefthand Canyon and Burrow Canyon. Much of the territory is managed as part of the Apache National Forest, revealing a network of remote forest roads and critical water sources such as Adair Spring and Laney Spring. The map documents a ranching and homesteading legacy through named locations like the Old Campbell Place, Ruyle Place, and the curiously named Potato Patch. Water management is evident through numerous livestock tanks, including the colorfully titled Foxy Grandpa Tank and Rim Tank, which supported livestock in this arid high-country environment.
