The northern reaches of Steamboat Springs and the expansive valley of the Elk River anchor this 2022 survey of Routt County. The landscape is defined by the transition from the broad river bottom, fed by the W Fork Elk River and Trull Cr, to the prominent elevations of Elk Mtn and the uniquely named landform The Sleeping Giant. Local agricultural and water management history is visible through a network of irrigation systems like the Wither Ditch, Elk-Valley Ditch, and Keller Ditch. These features, along with the Elk Mountain Cem and the settlement at Mystic, offer a clear picture of the rural infrastructure supporting the region. The map also captures the recreational and transit character of the area, ranging from the Eagle Soaring Airport to the wilderness trails of the Routt National Forest.
