Hebgen Lake and its prominent southern inlets, the South Fork Arm and Madison Arm, dominate this landscape at the edge of the Gallatin National Forest. The topography is defined by the Continental Divide marking the border between Montana and Idaho, where the high ridges of the Targhee National Forest descend into the Tygee Creek Basin. This 2014 survey documents the complex network of forest access and ranch roads, such as Bar N Ranch Rd and W Ranch Loop, that serve the Madison Valley. The area around Corette and the S Fork Madison River shows a transition from the high-elevation peaks near Observation Point to the meadows and springs like Black Sand Spring. Evidence of early regional travel remains visible in the alignment of Old Stage Rd and Targhee Pass Hwy.
