Lake Oahe dominates the eastern edge of this landscape, its waters filling the Missouri River valley and forming the prominent State Line Bay where the boundary between North Dakota and South Dakota is submerged. This 2017 survey illustrates the complex drainage system of the Standing Rock Reservation, where numerous seasonal waterways like Joe Bush Cr and Fireheart Cr carve through the uplands. The terrain is marked by a series of high ridges and deep coulees, with Blackfoot Cr and Baldhead Cr winding toward the Missouri. To the south, Hunkpapa Cr cuts across the prairie. The map provides a clear look at the sparsely populated ranching country of the Kenel District, where the rural grid is defined by routes such as 100th St and 101st St navigating the varied elevations of the Great Plains.
