Devils Postpile National Monument and its namesake basalt columns, Devils Postpile, anchor the southern reaches of this high-altitude landscape. The terrain is defined by volcanic features, from the massive profile of Mammoth Mountain to the geologically unique Earthquake Dome and Inyo Crater Lakes. Human activity is concentrated along the river valley and eastern slopes, marked by a network of seasonal outposts such as Agnew Meadows Campground, Soda Springs Campground, and the Pumice Flat F S Station.

Recreational infrastructure at the Mammoth Mtn Main Lodge and various Ski Lift lines show the area's development for winter sports by the early 1990s. Beyond the developed corridors, the wilderness character remains intact, protected within the Ansel Adams Wilderness and Inyo National Forest. Long-distance travel is represented by the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, which winds through the Middle Fork San Joaquin River valley past high-alpine waters like Rosalie Lake and Johnston Lake.
