The Manistique River meanders through a dense landscape of wetlands and northern forests in Schoolcraft County, captured here in a 1931 survey compiled from early Air Corps aerial photographs. This era in the Upper Peninsula was characterized by isolated rural schoolhouses that served local families, such as the Swede Settlement Sch located along the eastern U.S. Highway. Further west, the Wood Sch sits near the river's winding path, while the Palmer Sch is situated south near Palmer Lake. The drainage of the region is complex, defined by slow-moving waterways like Duck Creek and Bear Creek, and numerous isolated bodies of water including Merwin Lake and Minnow Lake. A Drainage Ditch in the northwest suggests active land management in an otherwise water-dominant environment.
