Gunnison National Forest and White River National Forest meet in this high-altitude landscape of the West Elk Mountains, dominated by the massif of Marcellina Mtn. In the early 1960s, the area remained largely defined by seasonal livestock grazing and difficult passage, evidenced by the Munsey Ruby Stock Driveway and the isolated West Side Cow Camp in the south. The drainage network is complex, with Anthracite Creek and its many forks carving through steep terrain marked by the Devils Stairway and Dark Canyon Creek.

Geological features like The Dyke and the sharp rise of the Ruby Range define the eastern boundary, where high-country drainages like Silver Basin and Gold Basin reflect the region's mineral prospecting history. Transportation is limited to a network of a Jeep Trail and a Pack Trail, emphasizing the wilderness character of the terrain before more modern access developed. The survey also captures prominent local landmarks like Prospect Point and Snowline Ridge, which served as critical Navigational points for ranchers and foresters.
