About this map

The Navajo Indian Reservation and Hopi Indian Reservation converge across this late nineteenth-century reconnaissance, dominated by the immense landforms of Black Mesa and Skeleton Mesa. The landscape is a complex network of high plateaus and deep drainage systems, most notably Tsegi Canyon and the wide Klethla Valley. Evidence of the critical importance of water in this arid environment is found in the many named water sources, such as Shato Spring, Na-sai-bi-to Spring Lake, and Chilchinbito Spring. To the north, Marsh Pass serves as a vital natural corridor between the mesas. Significant geological landmarks including Agathla Peak and Chaistla Butte rise prominently near Monument Pass on the Utah-Arizona Boundary Line, providing essential orientation for travelers during this era of early scientific survey.
