The Saint Joe River valley serves as the primary corridor for human activity in this northern Idaho landscape, with small settlements like Hoyt and Ethelton clustered along its banks. These communities, along with the Stanley Ranch, are connected by a network of riverside roads including St Joe River Rd and Siberts Old River Rd. The terrain rising north of the river is characterized by numerous steep gulches and high summits, such as Mastodon Mountain and Slate Peak. The drainage patterns are defined by the winding course of Slate Creek and its many tributaries, which have historically supported local extraction efforts. Evidence of the region's mining heritage is visible through the Mastodon Mine and the Franklin Mine, both positioned near the watercourses that descend from the high ridges toward the river valley.
