The Schell Creek Range dominates this portion of the Humboldt National Forest, where high-elevation drainage systems carve through the Nevada landscape. Water is a defining element of this high-desert terrain, with seasonal and perennial sources like Teapot Spring, Grouse Spring, and Sliderock Spring feeding the network of creeks that descend toward the flats. Mattier Cr and Whiteman Cr flow westward out of the mountains, eventually reaching the broad expanse of the Steptoe Valley.
