Industrial features including a Refinery, numerous Oil Wells, and a network of pipelines are interspersed with historic agricultural holdings like the Sims Ranch, White Ranch, and Le Beau Ranch. The high-plains terrain is further defined by the Overland Trail, which cuts across the southwestern corner, marking the path of early westward migration.

Water management is central to the area's utility, visible through the Fisher Field Ditch and various aqueducts that draw from Rock Creek and Foote Creek. To the west, the Medicine Bow River meanders through the flats near Willow Springs Cr. This survey, updated in the early 1980s, captures the settlement of McFadden at a time when traditional ranching and the petroleum industry shared the sagebrush-covered ridges of Pine Ridge.
