McCarthy sits at the edge of this landscape, serving as a gateway to the high-elevation terrain within the Wrangell-Saint Elias National Preserve and the adjoining Wrangell-Saint Elias National Park. The topography is dominated by the steep ascent toward Bonanza Ridge and Porphyry Mtn in the west, while the central valley is carved by the south-flowing McCarthy Cr. This drainage is joined by the E Fork McCarthy Cr and Nikolai Cr as it descends toward the Nizina River in the southeast.
