McCarthy Lake and dozens of smaller depressions characterize this corner of the Nebraska Sandhills, where the border of Morrill County and Garden County cuts through a landscape defined by seasonal wetlands and permanent water bodies. The terrain is marked by a complex network of alkali and freshwater lakes, including the aptly named Blue Stem Lake, Sturgeon Lake, and the elongated Richardson Lake. These hydrologic features are central to the region's character, providing critical habitat within the semi-arid grasslands.
