The high desert transition at the border of Washoe and Humboldt Counties is defined by a series of isolated water sources and complex drainage systems. The landscape is anchored by the Mcconnel Canyon and the surrounding Division Range, where elevation changes dictate the flow of seasonal water. High-altitude springs like Mcconnel Spring, Whiskey Spring, and Flower Spring provide critical points of interest in an otherwise arid environment. Along the western edge, the Willow Cr Reservoir sits as a primary hydrological feature, fed by the winding Willow Creek. Further east, the terrain rises into the Calico Hills and Sheep Buttes, where the network of ephemeral streams like Little Smoky Creek carves through the canyon floors. Navigation through this remote Great Basin area is primarily facilitated by primitive routes like Barley Road and CR-34.
