Bayou Bartholomew snakes through the western portion of this landscape, defining a complex system of oxbows and swampy depressions known as brakes. This agricultural region of Southeast Arkansas, straddling the Drew and Desha county line, is characterized by its reliance on these alluvial waterways and a network of rural roads such as the Old Tillar Hwy. The settlements of Tillar and Reed are situated along the rail corridor, while the northern outskirts of McGehee appear in the southeast corner. The presence of numerous small burial grounds, including the Bogue Pilgrim Cem and Saint Paul Cem, points to the long-standing community centers established among the cotton fields and wooded brakes like Cypress Brake. Smaller aviation facilities like the Tillar Airport and Flying G Ranch Airport reflect the modern utility of the flat Delta terrain.
