McKenzie Bridge and the small riverside community of Rainbow serve as the primary gateways to this section of the Willamette National Forest. The landscape is dominated by the confluence of the McKenzie River and its numerous tributaries, including West Fork Horse Creek and Castle Creek. The topography rises sharply from the river valley toward prominent peaks like Lookout Mtn and O'Leary Mountain.
