McKinney Tanks provides a critical water point in this high-desert region of Nye County, nestled between the elevations of Hannapah Peak and McKinney Tanks Summit. The landscape is defined by a dense network of seasonal drainage channels flowing south and west from the higher elevations of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest area. Transportation through this arid terrain is facilitated by Natl Forest Develop Road 459 Rd, which connects the remote mountain peaks to the wider desert floor. This 2012 survey documents the persistent importance of natural water catchments in an area otherwise characterized by vast stretches of open rangeland and sparse vegetation.
