McNary serves as the central hub of this high-country landscape, situated on the border of Navajo and Apache counties within the Sitgreaves National Forest. The geography is defined by a series of volcanic peaks and high-altitude wetlands, including Largo Mtn, Kinney Mtn, and Haystack Cienega. A complex network of drainage systems, such as Gooseberry Creek and the N Fork White River, carves through the timberland, supported by numerous springs and tanks like Twomile Spring and Buck Spring Tank.
