The Niobrara National Scenic River corridor defines the southern landscape of this 2021 study, where the waterway creates a significant physical boundary between Keya Paha and Brown counties. The small settlement of Meadville sits just north of the river, connected by the Meadville Bridge which facilitates travel across the valley. North of the river breaks, the terrain transitions into the high plains, where the headwaters of Jewett Cr and Rock Cr begin their descent toward the Niobrara valley.
