Melrose serves as the primary settlement on this landscape, positioned along the banks of the Big Hole River where St Hwy 91 and the Frontage Rd parallel the water. The town's grid, including Hecla St and Broad St, is centered near the Melrose Cem and Maddox Hole. To the north, the small community of Divide and the area of Quinn mark the edge of a more rugged terrain where the Beaverhead National Forest begins. The topography is defined by numerous drainages and peaks, such as Goat Mtn, Shepherd Mtn, and the distinctive Maiden Rock. A series of canyons including Soap Gulch, Chicken Gulch, and Selway Gulch carve through the mountains, while springs like Trapper Spring and Maud Spring suggest the hydrological character of the high country.
