Red Cedar Lake dominates this landscape, its waters broken by a series of named landforms including Faust Island, Stout Island, Honeymoon Island, and Bradys Island. The settlement of Mikana serves as a primary hub on the western shore, anchored by the Mikana Post Office and the Cedar Lake Dam at the head of the Red Cedar River. The shoreline reflects a transition toward recreational and residential use with numerous access roads like Lanark Dr and Easy Shore Rd winding through the timbered tracts and around the northern bays near McHenry Island.

Away from the water, the terrain is shaped by agricultural drainage and early infrastructure. Water management is evident at Bolger Dam on the central marshes and Murphy Dam to the east on Hemlock Creek. The interior contains landmarks for both local history and utility, such as the Cedar Lake Cemetery south of Loveland Corners and the Birchwood Lookout Tower positioned on higher ground to the northeast. Transportation reaches the periphery via the Tag-a-long Airport and a grid of rural routes including Cheese Factory Rd and Valley Rd.
