Gila National Forest encompasses this high-altitude landscape in the Tularosa Mountains, where the headwaters of the Tularosa River and Negrito Cr carve deep canyons through volcanic mesas. The topography is defined by prominent elevations such as Milligan Mtn and Willow Spring Mtn, connected by the Sheep Basin Divide. Water management in this arid environment is evident through a network of vital cattle tanks and natural sources, including Kimball Spring and Willow Spring. Historically a region of ranching and timber, the terrain is accessed via State Hwy 12 in the northwest, which crosses the broad expanse of Higgins Flat. Notable landmarks like Polk Mesa and Flat Top Mesa highlight the distinct volcanic geography of Catron County.
