Annawan and Mineral anchor the southern portion of this landscape, situated along the border of Henry and Bureau counties. The region is defined by an extensive and complex drainage network, indicative of historical efforts to manage the wetlands of the Illinois prairie. A massive system of artificial waterways, including the Bureau County Ditch, Fairfield Union Special Ditch, and Mineral Marsh Ditch, crisscrosses the terrain to regulate the Green River and its tributaries. These engineered channels, alongside named features like the Feeder Basin and Goose Pond Ditch, illustrate the agricultural transformation of the area. Local heritage is preserved at the Gold Township Cem, while the winding paths of Coal Cr and Lawson Cr provide a natural contrast to the rigid grid of county roads and drainage canals.
