The terrain is deeply dissected, featuring prominent landmarks like Hells Gulch and a series of numbered waterways including First Creek, Second Creek, and Fivemile Creek. Evidence of land use and remote operations is found at the Balsam Ranch and scattered sites simply labeled Well. A primitive Jeep Trail provides one of the few named transit routes through the western uplands, reflecting the isolation of this Montana high plains region during the mid-twentieth century.
