Dolly Varden Mountains rise sharply above the expansive drainage basin of Steptoe Valley, defining a high-desert landscape in this portion of Elko County. The terrain is deeply incised by drainages such as Corral Canyon, Crow Canyon, and North Creek Canyon, which gather seasonal runoff into Nelson Cr and the smaller N Cr. Such geography historically dictated the routes of travel and the locations of vital water sources like Crow Spring, which sits at the base of the mountain slopes.
