About this map

The Klamath Indian Reservation dominates the eastern landscape of this survey, where the rugged escarpment of Plum Ridge and Naylox Mountain rises sharply from the shores of Upper Klamath Lake. Along the narrow shoreline bench, the Southern Pacific railroad and Pacific Highway connect small settlements like Algoma and Modoc Point. The northern reaches show the Williamson River winding through a system of levees and pumps near the David Hill Cemetery. To the south, the extensive reclamation projects of Caledonia Marsh and Wocus Marsh are visible, defined by the Caledonia Canal and Wocus Drainage Canal. This network of dikes and pumps reflects a mid-century era of intensive water management aimed at transforming the wetlands surrounding Howard Bay and Hanks Marsh into productive territory.
