About this map

The St Regis Indian Reservation dominates the northern landscape of this 1940s-era survey, where the St Regis River and Raquette River flow toward the international border. This region of Northern New York exhibits a dense network of early rural settlements and namesake corners, including Laverys Corner, Mc Ewens Corner, and Taylors Corner. The industrial footprint of the era is preserved in labels for the Brasher Iron Works and the Wagstaff Factory south of the Rutland rail line. Local education history is remarkably well-documented through a numbered system of schools, from School No 1 to the uniquely named Potter Sch. The map also captures the confluence of the St Lawrence River near Cornwall Island, illustrating the complex waterways that defined early commerce and transit in Franklin County.
