Big Cypress National Preserve dominates this southern Florida landscape, where the vast subtropical wetlands are carved by slow-moving watercourse channels known as strands. The northern portion of the map is bisected by the Tamiami Canal Number C-4, a significant drainage and transportation artery that runs parallel to the historic highway corridor. Near this junction, the small settlement of Monroe Station and the neighboring Trailtown represent the few permanent outposts of human habitation within the preserve.
