The N Fork Cimarron River meanders through the arid expanse of southeastern Baca County, cutting a path through the public lands of the Comanche National Grassland. This section of the High Plains is characterized by its wide-open topography and a sparse network of county roads, such as Co Rd 39 and Co Rd 44, which follow the rigid grid of the Public Land Survey System.
