About this map

The Texas and Pacific railroad cuts a diagonal line across this West Texas landscape, connecting early settlements like Morita and Trunk as it heads toward the expanding Settles Addition near the corner of the map. Surveyed just before the United States entered the second World War, the terrain is defined by a series of saline depressions and ephemeral waterways, most notably the expansive Natural Dam Salt Lake and the nearby Salt Lakes cluster. These water features, along with Sulphur Springs Draw and Beals Creek, dictated the placement of early infrastructure and ranching operations.
