The Continental Divide winds through the heart of the Wind River Range, marking a sharp boundary between the Shoshone National Forest to the east and Bridger National Forest to the west. This alpine landscape is anchored by the massive presence of Mount Bonneville and Mount Hooker, the latter featuring the Hooker Glacier on its north-facing slopes. These peaks overlook a complex system of glacial lakes and high passes, including Hailey Pass and Washakie Pass, which provided critical movement corridors through the high country.

Evidence of historical administrative divisions and land use is found in the Wind River Indian Reservation boundary in the northeast and the Lander Rd Forest Bdy traversing the heights. A network of high-altitude paths like the Highline Trail and Cottonwood Trail connects drainage basins such as those of the East Fork River and Boulder Creek, showing the established recreational and survey infrastructure of the late 20th century.
