Mount Darwin and the surrounding high-altitude wilderness define this 2015 study of the Sierra Nevada's crest, where the boundaries of Sierra National Forest, Inyo National Forest, and Kings Canyon National Park converge. The landscape is characterized by extreme vertical relief and glacial features, including Goethe Glacier and the Goethe Cirque. Significant hiking corridors such as the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail traverse the western portion of the map, descending through McClure Meadow and Colby Meadow into the prominent Evolution Valley.
