Mount Dome rises as the central landmark of this High Desert landscape, situated where the Modoc National Forest meets the Klamath National Forest. The geography is defined by volcanic plateaus like Big Tableland and Little Tableland, overlooking the marshes of the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge to the north.

Evidence of early ranching and settlement is scattered throughout the region, from the Laird Landing (Site) on the refuge edge to the isolated Stinson Cabin and Willow Creek Ranch. A network of unpaved tracks and the Dorris Brownel Road connect these remote outposts, tracing the natural contours of Box Canyon and the Panhandle Hills. Numerous small lakes, including Sheep Camp Lake and Bonita Lake, provide vital water sources in an otherwise arid terrain dominated by buttes and volcanic formations.
