Mount Elbert and La Plata Peak anchor this high-altitude landscape within the San Isabel National Forest, where the Sawatch Range reaches its most prominent heights. The 2016 survey highlights a complex network of glacial valleys and steep ridgelines, including Ellingwood Ridge and Twin Peaks. Below these summits, the settlement of Twin Lakes serves as a gateway to the mountains, positioned near Lake Creek Reservoir and Cozart Reservoir. This era of the landscape is defined by its recreational infrastructure, featuring the famed Continental Divide National Scenic Trail and the curiously named Bermuda Triangle Trail. Water is a constant presence even at these elevations, from the alpine Willis Lake and Crystal Lake to the churning waters of Snyder Falls. Dozens of deep drainages like Bartlett Gulch and Echo Canyon illustrate the dramatic erosion that has shaped this part of the Continental Divide.
