Mount Hilgard and the surrounding high-altitude terrain of Fresno County are defined by a complex network of glacial basins and steep ridgelines along the Mono Divide. This 2012 survey documents a landscape dominated by water and rock, featuring numerous high-country basins such as Granite Park and French Canyon. The map reveals a high concentration of subalpine lakes, including the sprawling Lake Italy and the cluster of Royce Lakes beneath Royce Peak.
