Mount Hilgard and the high ridges of the Sierra National Forest dominate this alpine landscape along the Mono Divide. This portion of the High Sierra, surveyed in 2021, shows a complex glacial environment defined by numerous small lakes and granite peaks. Notable water bodies include Lake Italy, Seven Gables Lakes, and a series of bear-named basins such as Teddy-Bear Lake and Black Bear Lake. The map reveals the intricate network of high-altitude routes used by modern backpackers and long-distance hikers, most notably the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail as it traverses the western edge. Critical geographic junctions like Italy Pass and Selden Pass connect these drainage basins, while the deep cut of Piute Canyon and the open expanse of Hutchinson Meadow provide lower-elevation contrast to the surrounding 12,000-foot summits like Mt Julius Caesar and Bear Creek Spire.
