Wenatchee National Forest dominates this mountain landscape, where the infrastructure of transcontinental travel meets the high peaks of the Chiwaukum Mountains. Near the settlement of Berne, the western portal of the New Cascade Tunnel stands as a critical engineering landmark for the Great Northern Railway’s successor lines, bypassing the steep grades of the northern Cascades. The terrain is defined by a series of prominent summits including Mount Howard, Mt Mastiff, and Rock Mountain. A dense network of drainage systems, such as Nason Creek and the Little Wenatchee River, feeds alpine basins containing Lake Ethel, Merritt Lake, and Crescent Lake. Forest Service access is detailed via the Natl Forest Develop Road 6500 Rd and others, providing a view of the area's recreational and industrial management during the early 21st century.
