About this map

Herron River and its braided channels dominate this mid-century Alaskan interior landscape, flowing northward across the foothills of the Alaska Range. In the southeastern portion of the sheet, the National Park Boundary marks the edge of Mt Mc Kinley National Park, an area defined by significant elevation changes and prominent geodetic markers like VABM Castle 2079. Evidence of human presence is sparse in this subarctic wilderness, represented by a single Cabin located near the base of the Castle Rocks formation. The drainage system is complex, with Highpower Creek and Jack Frost Creek feeding into the lowlands, creating a landscape of scattered ponds and small water bodies such as Burnt Lake and Castle Rocks Lake. This survey reflects the region's character as a frontier for geological and aerial survey work during the 1950s.
