Hecla Mines and several other significant historic workings dominate the northern high country of this Beaverhead National Forest survey. The landscape is a dense concentration of early extraction sites, including the Franklin Mine, Trapper Mine, and Cleve Mine, where numerous adits, prospects, and mine shafts mark the terrain around Lion Mountain and Soppington. This area was clearly a focal point for late 20th-century geological interest, with activity clustered near Cleve Park and the headwaters of Trapper Creek.

South of the mining district, the terrain rises into the high peaks of the Pioneer Mountains, centered on the massive Mount Tahepia and Mount Alverson. This alpine region is dotted with numerous high-altitude basins containing Waukena Lake, Tahepia Lake, and Tendoy Lake. The division between the Dillon Ranger District and Wise River Dillon follows the high ridgelines, separating the drainage of Canyon Creek from the eastern slopes near Cherry Creek.
