Mt Washington serves as the focal point of this high-elevation landscape, where the volcanic history of the Cascade Range is on full display. The area is defined by massive geological formations including Belknap Crater, Little Belknap, and Black Crater, which dominate the central and southern portions of the terrain. This environment is transected by the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, which snakes through the lava fields and forests between Willamette National Forest and Deschutes National Forest.
