Mt Wood and the surrounding high-altitude terrain of the Granite Range dominate this portion of the Custer National Forest. The landscape is defined by massive glacial features, including the broad Stillwater Plateau and Fishtail Plateau, which rise above a network of alpine basins. These drainages feed several high lakes such as Lake Wildness, Wood Lake, and Chrome Lake. The complex hydrology of the area is illustrated by the headwaters of W Fishtail Cr, Flume Cr, and Nye Cr. This 2014 survey documents the wilderness character of the region, showing few signs of human infrastructure beyond a handful of forest routes like Benbow Rd and trails leading toward peaks such as Pyramid Mtn and Mt Hague. The nomenclature reflects both the physical geography, such as Black Butte, and more curious local identifiers like The Golf Course, a large flat-topped landform in the northern reaches of the quadrangle.
