The Ritter Range dominates this High Sierra landscape, where the jagged spires of the Minarets and the massive profiles of Mount Ritter and Banner Peak define the horizon. This 2004 revision by the Forest Service highlights a region largely preserved within the Ansel Adams Wilderness, spanning the boundary between Sierra National Forest and Inyo National Forest. High-altitude hydrology is a central theme, with the sprawling Thousand Island Lake and Garnet Lake feeding into a network of alpine basins including Waugh Lake and Agnew Lake. Evidence of human passage and industry appears at the Minaret Mine near Volcanic Ridge and along the iconic John Muir Scenic Trail, which threads through Island Pass and Agnew Pass. Farther west, the terrain drops toward Stevenson Meadow and the Hemlock Crossing Footbridge, marking the more secluded drainages of the San Joaquin River watershed.
