The cultural landscape is marked by the presence of Old Fort Wingate near San Rafael and several traditional Hispanic settlements such as Cebolleta, Moquino, and Casa Salazar. To the north, the terrain transitions into the high plateau country of Chacra Mesa and Prieta Mesa, where isolated post offices like Guadalupe (Miller P.O.) served a sparsely populated ranching and mining frontier before the turn of the century.
