Deer Prairie Slough and Mossy Island Slough define this hydrologically complex landscape along the border of Sarasota and Manatee counties. The terrain is characterized by a network of seasonal wetlands and drainage channels, including Mud Slough and the engineered Big Slough Canal. High ground is marked by localized hammocks, such as Cat Hammock and Messer Hammock, which provide ecological variety in the low-lying interior.
