The Mustang Mountains dominate this high-desert landscape south of the Whetstone Mountains, where the convergence of Cochise, Santa Cruz, and Pima counties creates a complex grid of ranching and conservation land. The southern foothills drop away into significant drainage systems including Vaughn Canyon, O'Donnell Canyon, and Lyle Canyon, all eventually feeding toward the Babocomari River. Evidence of vital water sources in this arid environment is found at Cottonwood Spring and Mescal Spring.
