The Brule River defines the winding boundary between Michigan and Wisconsin in this northern lake country, passing the small settlement of Naults. Much of the landscape is protected within the Nicolet National Forest and the Whisker Lake Wilderness, where a dense network of water bodies such as Whisker Lake, Boot Lake, and Riley Lake dots the terrain. This drainage pattern is characterized by numerous small tributaries, including Armstrong Creek and Wakefield Creek, which feed into larger systems like the Pine River to the south.
