The Ohio River forms a sweeping boundary along the northern and eastern edges of this West Virginia landscape, dictating the development of riverside settlements like New Haven, Syracuse, and Racine. The river’s importance to the local economy is evidenced by a series of points of access, including Peytons Landing and Alexanders Landing. Further south, the river channel breaks around Letart Island near the rocky shoals of Letart Falls.
