About this map

Salt evaporators and tidal sloughs dominate the western edge of this East Bay landscape, where the San Francisco Bay shoreline meets the industrial and residential growth of the mid-20th century. The intricate network of salt evaporators is punctuated by landmarks of early maritime and rail commerce, including the remote settlement of Drawbridge and the riverfront operations at Jarvis Landing. Inland, the Nimitz Freeway and the Southern Pacific tracks corridor drive the expansion of Union City (Alvarado), Newark, and Fremont (Centerville District).
