Jefferson National Forest dominates the high ridges and steep hollows north of Blacksburg in this 2016 study. The landscape is defined by the massive parallel formations of Johns Creek Mtn, Clover Hollow Mtn, and Brush Mtn, which channel waterways like Sinking Creek and Craig Cr through narrow valleys. This area preserves several historic landmarks, most notably the Sinking Creek Covered Bridge near Newport.

Evidence of early Appalachian settlement is scattered throughout the drainages, including numerous family and community burial grounds such as Clover Hollow Cem, Leffel Cem, and Williams Cem. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail winds across the northern peaks, passing Kelly Knob and Piney Ridge before descending toward Huffman. South of the forest boundary, the map captures the transition to the edge of the Blacksburg city limits and the community of Mount Tabor.
